From Refugee Camp to City Hall

Keynotes · commencements · immigrant and refugee organizations

Mike Elliott spent his earliest years in Liberia — on his grandmother's farm in the village of Suehn and in Gardnersville, outside Monrovia — until the civil war upended everything. He survived the war running for safety with his grandmother, who carried him on her back when he could no longer walk. He arrived in the United States at eleven as a refugee and grew up in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

Two decades later he became the city's first Black mayor — and the first Liberian-American mayor in U.S. history. This talk traces that arc: the refugee experience, the community that opened its doors, and what his story says about who gets to lead in America — delivered in a voice that is personal, funny, and unflinching.

Audiences leave with a concrete sense of what immigrant communities actually need from institutions — and a story students, graduates, and civic audiences carry with them long after the event.
